A New Technique for Safe, Atraumatic Removal of Intraocular Foreign Bodies

5: 54, Jeffrey L. Olson, MD

Synopsis

This video details a new device for removal of intraocular foreign bodies using a suction-based grasping mechanism.  Several large, irregular objects were inserted into enucleated porcine eyes.  The objects were too large or difficult to be removed with conventional vitreoretinal forceps or magnets.    Once grasped, the objects were then lifted from the retina and removed from the eye.  The video demonstrates the device in the laboratory and the technique in a surgical setting.
